After 50 years of research into the effects of the Transcendental Meditation technique and hundreds of peer-reviewed studies published in the scientific literature, the many health benefits of TM practice are well documented, including reduction in blood pressure, improved cardiovascular health, reduced stress and anxiety, lower incidence of employee burnout, improvement in ADHD symptoms, and fewer hospitalizations, to name just a few of the documented results.
The reason TM practice is so effective at improving health is because it is a powerfully effective tool for developing our consciousness.
When we develop our consciousness, we’re simultaneously developing all aspects of life—mind, body, emotions, intelligence, creativity—everything.
Consciousness is the most fundamental aspect of life, and our state of consciousness directly impacts our health.
Nourishing all aspects of the physiology from its source
TM Founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi explained that “By watering the root we supply nourishment to all aspects of the tree.” When we transcend during our TM practice, we’re contacting and enlivening ourselves from the fundamental root of our life: consciousness.
We’re accessing the inner source of nourishment and vitality by experiencing the state of restful alertness, our deepest inner Self. This experience creates greater coherence in the brain and offers profound and healing rest to the physiology—by many measures, deeper even than sleep.
Most importantly, transcending awakens our consciousness to the full range of our potential, to our own unbounded possibilities. This allows us to be our true Self, to be at home with ourself. And that’s the healthiest thing there is.
