Ayurveda is the world’s most ancient, holistic science of health, having originated in India thousands of years ago. The word Ayurveda comes from two Sanskrit words: Ayus, meaning life or life span, and Veda, meaning knowledge or science. Ayurveda is “the science of life” for health, prevention, and greater well-being.

TM Founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi revived Ayurvedic knowledge, a modern restoration known as Maharishi AyurVeda®. This renewal of ancient wisdom has helped spur worldwide popular and scientific interest in Ayurveda and has contributed to the current trend toward more natural, holistic healthcare.

A holistic, integrative approach to health

Maharishi AyurVeda considers interrelationships of mind, body, consciousness, behavior, and environment

As an integrative system of natural healthcare, Maharishi AyurVeda programs consider the interrelationships of your mind, body, consciousness, behavior, and environment, and work in harmony with standard medical approaches.

The mind plays a primary role in your overall state of health. For this reason Maharishi AyurVeda recommends the Transcendental Meditation technique first and foremost to dissolve stress and its effects, and to bring peace and balance to mind and body.

Maharishi AyurVeda programs also include these natural modalities:

  • Herbal formulas prepared precisely according to the ancient Vedic texts, to promote and restore mental and physical health
  • Individualized diets to balance the neurophysiology according to your mind-body type
  • Maharishi YogaSM asanas for balance, flexibility, and coordination between mind and body
  • Daily and seasonal routines to align yourself with the cycles of nature
  • Pulse diagnosis to assess balance and imbalances in mind and body

The story of Maharishi’s revival of Ayurveda

Maharishi worked with Ayurvedic experts to revive ancient systems of herbal preparation and use

In the late 1970s, Maharishi invited India’s most renowned and experienced Ayurvedic physicians to share their knowledge with one another and integrate the best practices from their family and professional traditions dating back many centuries.

These master physicians of Ayurveda worked with Maharishi over many years to revive a complete understanding of this ancient system from the original Ayurvedic texts, including the knowledge of proper cultivation, preparation, and use of indigenous herbs.

Researchers and Ayurvedic experts conducted scientific studies on herbal formulations and techniques

The result was Maharishi AyurVeda, the most comprehensive and effective system of Ayurveda, affirmed by the All-India Ayurveda Congress as the “authentic interpretation of Ayurveda in its complete and original form.”

Western-trained medical doctors and researchers continue to collaborate with Ayurvedic experts to conduct scientific studies on the effectiveness of herbal formulations and other Ayurvedic techniques.

The herbal health supplements used in this system are offered by Maharishi AyurVeda Products International (MAPI). Product safety and purity come from decades of quality control—all herbs are sustainably grown and harvested, and rigorously tested for safety.
