In a press conference held in Washington, D.C. in 1985, Maharishi invited members of the press to ask questions about the Transcendental Meditation technique. A reporter from USA Today asks Maharishi if TM is a religion.
Question: Many people think of you as a religious leader and think of Transcendental Meditation (TM) as a religion. Now, I understand that this is not true?
Answer: What we can do is, we’ll congratulate all those people who think so because they are such good people that anything they think to be as good as religion. Religion, the path to God; it is a very beautiful thing—path to God. All good is there in religion. Religion is a good thing.
So, when people see that Transcendental Meditation is all good, it’s really very good, and really applicable to all, they think it must be a religion, because they know religion to be good.
From that point of view, I congratulate all those religious people who think that nothing can be out of religion in the world. Those who think science is out of religion, they neither know science today, nor do they know religion.
What is science today? The unified field of all the laws of nature. What is law of nature? Will of God. Natural law is the will of God. What scientists have been calling “natural law,” religious people have been calling “will of God.” The difficulty was that the two areas of society did not have a common platform.
